Mankind has been awed, mystified and puzzled by the domestic cat. They have been worshiped as Gods and Goddesses and have been killed for being in league with Satan. There are some interesting facts about cats that give them their well deserved reputation of begin a creature of magic.

Many cat lovers want to know more fun facts about cats that make them love their feline companions even more. Part of their mystery is that they are secretive and in essences magical. Many cat lovers want to know some strange facts about cats so that they understand their felines better.

Ten Facts about Cats

1 – The night belongs to the cat. Her night sight is far superior to the animals it hunts. The have light reflecting eyes which absorb the light of the moon and stars.

2 – When a cat purrs it was considered that the cat was content and happy. It’s been proven that cats purr not only when they are content and happy but they also purr when they are in pain or afraid.

3 – Cats have been domesticated for half as long as dogs.

4 – Cats need fat in their diet because they can’t produce it themselves.

5 – Declawing a cat is comparable to cutting a human’s finger off at the knuckle.

6 – Most cats are unable to digest sugar.

7 – The domestic cat is the only feline which holds it’s tail up, all wild cats hold their tails straight out or relaxed behind their legs.

8 – Cats will kill their prey based on movement. She may not recognize it as food. Her mother teaches her these basic skills.

9 – A mother cat will teach her kittens to cross a street to avoid cars.

10 – The name for a group of adult cats is called a “clowder” and a group of kittens is called a “kindle.”

It is believed that the Egyptians domesticated the cat by growing grain and storing it, attracting rodents which attracted snakes and cats. Many believe this occurred four thousand years ago. In 1983 in Cyprus, dating 7,500 years ago back in the Neolithic period, they found a human buried with his processions. They made another discovery of a small grave of a 8 month old kitten, facing the same westerly direction as the human, 18 inches away from the human. Many think that the cat came to man’s fire long before Egypt.

Black Death swept through Europe and the Christians thought it was the wrath of God. Since cats who are aloof and independent were considered imps of Satan, many of these animals were tossed into bonfires. Had the cats not been exterminated in such numbers they could have prevented much of the spread of the plague, which of course, was caused by the fleas on rodents.

The Old Wives tale of a cat sucking the breath out of a newborn infant has been traced back to 1607.

In the US, black cats are considered bad luck, while white cats are considered good luck. It’s the opposite in the United Kingdom where white cats are bad luck and black cats are good luck.

Cats and Their Impact on the World

No other animal has held our imaginations like the cat. Even today it’s shrouded in mystery and follows it’s own path. To many people, you either love cats or hate them, there is no middle road.
